Trust your Gut

Changing jobs and direction in one's career is incredibly stressful! There is no reason why anyone should think that it isn't or shouldn't be. Give yourself a break, and be realistic. Tell yourself, "this is a process, and like all processes, it has a beginning and an end." Aside from buying a home, choosing a life partner (or not), or making a significant investment -- how you choose to spend every working day of your life is a major decision.

We're all taught to think, be smart and use common sense. We know we have to be pragmatic -- we must be able to support ourselves, a family, attain and obtain, climb the ladder and make money. So, we use our intellectual and rational reasoning tools and base our decisions upon our need to succeed and continually do better. Rarely do we consider what our gut tells us to do.

Those candidates who let other people make decisions for them are less fortunate. It happens all the time. Someone a candidate knows had a bad experience with someone last month, three years ago -- it's unbelievable the criteria some candidates incorporate into their decision making process. (Whatever happened to "be thy own judge?").

Some of us are lucky in that we know what we want. There are people who know exactly what they want to do for work and there's no denying them. Some of us are not that lucky; plenty of successful communications professionals change their jobs every two to three years and "the jobs just keep getting better and more fun."
