Time to Change Jobs?
How do you know when it's time to change your job? It would be easier if there were a core set of questions or issues one could address to assist in making this decision. Well, there is! (Just ask us.) There are lots of different reasons and motivations for changing positions. But everyone is different and there is no one set of rules that applies to everyone. For some, it's recognizing that they can out-strategize supervisors. For still others, it's recognizing that it's been too long since they were excited about learning something new or different. For others, "the writing on the wall" is plain to see regarding upward mobility and hitting that proverbial glass ceiling. And yet for others, the quest for professional development and challenge guides the process. We often ask candidates if they've been given projects that motivate and interest them. We ask if they believe staying where they are makes them more marketable in a year's time or not. The age old and perplexing life balance issue is also a huge motivator for candidates. Quality of life is influenced by your work colleagues, your work environment, and even your commute. It's amazing how many people will refuse to drive one more exit on a freeway, while others will take two extra subways increasing their commute two-fold, all for a new job! Lest you forget, there are chemistry and personality issues. By nature, the chemistry of work relationships with peers should be as fluid as the environment itself. Those who are resistant to change will either stagnate or be passed. They are in a constant state of analysis paralysis. On the other end of the spectrum are the fortune seekers who are never quite satisfied and are always looking.
